BODY SCULPTING FOR MEN
In today's success-oriented, competitive environment, image can make a big difference. You may have tried to diet and exercise on a regular basis, only to find that those "love handles," fatty chest, belly, and that fatty pouch under your chin just won't go away. Your reasons for choosing to have liposuction may be as simple as just wanting to look better at the beach or on the job. While liposuction is not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle, it can make you look and feel better.

Who Is a Good Candidate?
You are a good candidate for treatment if you have:

  • large and prominent "breasts" on one or both sides
  • bothered by excess skin in the chest area
  • been unsuccessful losing the fullness through diet and exercise
For men who have been working out regularly but still want more definition Dr. Mausner can offer abdominal "etching." Abdominal "etching" is a liposculpture procedure that uses extremely small cannulas to achieve a "six pack." The abdominal muscles are more clearly defined giving the tummy a more youthful, fit look.

To find out if you could benefit from Liposuction and Body Sculpting or another cosmetic procedure, please call Mausner Plastic Surgery Center at 301-564-4466 to schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Mausner today.

MALE BREAST REDUCTION (Gynecomastia)
In today's competitive job market, it's important to look your best. More and more men are electing to have cosmetic surgery, a trend that studies have shown is tied to career advancement. One study revealed that 84% of men surveyed believed that physical attractiveness was important for power and success on the job.

Gynecomastia, a medical word from the Greek words for "woman-like breasts," affects one out of every ten men. Enlarged breasts on young boys last only a few years and are generally resolved by age 18. After the age of 18, if the condition persists, the enlarged breasts on a man can be uncomfortable, as well as socially and psychologically upsetting. Although gynecomastia may be associated with obesity, hormones, liver disease or certain medicines most often it is due to inherited genetics. Prior to choosing a surgical solution to gynecomastia, Dr. Mausner will assess your overall medical health.

Your consultation
During your consultation with Dr. Mausner you will explain your goals and expectations of the surgery. Dr. Mausner will assess the nature of your breasts and the elasticity of your skin to determine the cause of your breast enlargement. It may be caused by fatty tissue and/or glandular tissue. You will have the opportunity to view several before and after treatment photographs of patients who have had the same problem. Dr. Mausner will explain your treatment options, the expected recovery time and what surgery can achieve.

The Procedure Options
Male breast reduction is performed on an out patient basis with general anesthesia administered by board-certified anesthesiologists. The procedure can last from one to three hours depending on the extent of correction.

Liposuction, Ultrasonic Liposuction and the Tumescent Technique
If your gynecomastia is primarily caused by fatty tissue, liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction is usually the procedure of choice. Liposuction surgery is a procedure used to actually remove unwanted localized deposits of fat cells from the body. Once removed, these fat cells cannot grow back.

Starting with the state-of-the-art technique known as the Tumescent Technique, a large volume of fluid is placed under the chest skin. This helps to separate the fat and minimizes post-operative pain and bruising. A sound wave tube (ultrasonic cannula) is placed under the skin to gently breakup the fat cells then Dr. Mausner follows this with a sculpting technique using a tube-like cannula. All of this is done through a tiny incision placed in an inconspicuous location in the armpit. The result is a resculpting of bulging breasts into flatter, more acceptable chest contours.

Traditional Surgical Excision
Although it is uncommon, if your gynecomastia is the result of a severe glandular disorder, liposuction alone may not be adequate. Traditional surgical excision may be a better option. Typically, the incision is placed on the edge of the areola (colored area of the nipple) or in the underarm area. Dr. Mausner will work through these incisions to cut away the excess glandular tissue, fat and skin from the breast. If your reduction requires the removal of significant amounts of tissue, larger incisions may be required.

What is recovery from male breast reduction surgery like?
Bed rest is recommended for the first day. You will experience some pain for several days that will be well managed with pain relievers. For the first two weeks following your surgery, you will wear a special compression garment. You may shower two days after surgery and drive a car by the forth or fifth day. Antibiotics will be prescribed to minimize your chance for infection. Most men experience some degree of swelling, bruising and tenderness but these symptoms should decrease daily.

Because Dr. Mausner uses no external stitches, there will be no "stitch marks" and no painful suture removal is needed! Most patients are back to work within the first week. Following your breast reduction surgery, you will enjoy a new, more pleasing body shape. All of our patients say their surgery enhanced their self-confidence and their ability to wear form-fitting clothing. They even feel good enough to go shirtless!

In summary, we believe that the best results can be obtained when the procedure is individualized to meet your specific body type and desires! So if you would like to improve the shape or look of your chest, call Mausner Plastic Surgery Center at 301-564-4466 to schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Mausner today!
