BREAST REDUCTION
Excessively large, sagging breasts can be uncomfortable, unhealthy and distracting from a woman's appearance. Large breasts can also restrict certain activities and make it difficult to find clothes and bras to fit. Dr. Mausner performs breast reduction surgery to reduce and reshape overdeveloped breasts. Through state-of-the-art techniques this can help minimize back pain, shoulder strap furrows, hand numbness and breathing difficulty.

Who are the best candidates for breast reduction?
The best candidates are women:
- with very large breasts who want physical relief
- with one breast significantly larger than the other
- with indentations in their shoulders from tight bra straps
- who are self-conscious or dissatisfied with their oversized breasts

How is the procedure performed?
Dr. Mausner performs breast reduction surgery as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The procedure takes between two to four hours. There are many variations to the procedure. The most common procedure involves an incision that circles the nipple/areola and extends downward and follows the crease beneath the breast. Dr. Mausner removes the excess glandular and fatty tissue then the nipple and areola are gently moved upward to their new position. At no time is the nipple/areola removed from the breast! The skin is then drawn together around the areola, providing a new shape to your breast. All incisions are closed with dissolving stitches under the skin so their are no "track marks" left on the breasts. And because the sutures dissolve, Dr. Mausner does not have to pull out any sutures during your recovery period.
How will I feel after surgery?
The initial recovery period from breast reduction procedure takes about 7 - 10 days. Following your surgery, it is a good idea to sleep on your back to avoid undo pressure on your breasts. You may shower on the third day. It is usually possible to return to work in 7 - 10 days. Sexual activity should be avoided for two weeks following surgery, and you should avoid strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks. Bruising and swelling may take up to six weeks to disappear, and it may take up to a year or two for the scars to flatten and fade.
What about feeling in the nipples?
Frequently women with large, heavy or sagging breasts have poor nipple sensation. Although not performed to increase feeling, many of Dr. Mausner's patients experience improved nipple sensation following breast reduction / lift surgery.
What about nursing your child?
If you are considering having children, you should discuss this with Dr. Mausner during your consultation. The ability to nurse after you have had the size of your breasts reduced is unpredictable. However if breast feeding is an important priority for you, you should consider having a breast reduction only after you have had all your planned children.
What about mammograms?
Before having surgery Dr. Mausner requests that you have a mammogram to assure that your breasts are healthy. Following your procedure a new mammogram will be ordered six months later which will become your new "baseline" mammogram. Self breast examination should be performed, as usual, monthly. The risk of developing breast cancer seems to remain unchanged following a breast reduction. Dr. Mausner may make further recommendations during your consultation.
Are the results permanent?
The results of breast reduction surgery are permanent, but breast size may change due to weight gain or pregnancy.
Your new figure
A breast reduction can make a dramatic change in your appearance and your outlook. A breast reduction can make your breasts appear firmer and more youthful. Many patients find a new enjoyment in sports, exercise, dancing or even just walking.
In summary, we believe that the best results can be obtained when the procedure, is individualized to meet your specific body type and desires!
